Silver Appleyard Ducks
Another very critical breed, in the 2000 American Livestock Breeds Conservancy found only 128
breeding birds in the USA. Thankfully the numbers are rising, but we are far from out of the
woods. The Silver Appleyard is perhaps one of the best ducks suited towards homesteading.
They have a large, blocky body weighing 6-8 lbs, shell out a very respectable 220-250 eggs per
year and are quiet, active foragers. When well fed they stick very close to home. Their meat is
lean and flavorful. Most of all, they are gorgeous ducks! Drakes and hens have a basic mallard
pattern, with the drakes showing soft silvering all over their body. Hens have a soft buff and cream
color, with 2 stripes above the eye. I have found our Appleyard ducks to be very agreeable in
temperament and are not flightly like some breeds.
