RESCUE HOME
Written by Carolyn Van Wert 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the farm Creatures were stirring in home, field and barn; They were talking and prancing and combing their hair, In hopes that adopters soon would be there. The kittens were posing all snug in their beds, While adorable puppies wrestled with toys instead. The old dogs were waiting by the dish for a treat, And the cats were wishing for a bit of meat. As the night grew longer the animals despaired, Wouldn’t a family come take them from here? A family with children, faces wondrous and bright, Would they come pick a new friend at the rescue tonight? The moon was rising and the snow began to blow, The last spark of hope in their hearts began to go. When, what to their wondering eyes should appear, Headlights in the drive began to come near. A procession of humans came up the walk, Upon the rescue door the first began to knock. “Please let us in, we’ve come for the orphans who need our help! When the old dogs heard that, they awoke with a yelp. "First Eli! Next Rain! Then Teto and Honey! Natasha, and Sallie and one fuzzy bunny! Papers were signed, hugs given and tears fell. One by one creatures began to leave, with their stories to tell. And then, in a instant a glowing appeared, A sweet sounding voice from the sky came near. A beautiful angel, snowy and white, Came with a message for all on this good night. “Honor the creatures you bring in your home, For each cold night, more are left to roam. Starving and thirsty, dying of cold, Beaten and chained, the young and the old. Her eyes held tears that ran down her cheeks, With rapt attention she again turned to speak. “The simple creatures that call this rescue their home, Never again will they be left to die all alone. “They are safe here and fed, Given warm quarters and beds. But there is no greater thing for a creature to know, Is a family that loves him, and a home of it’s own. In a fluttering of feathers and a twinkle of stars The animal’s angel flew away over the cars. All the creatures were silent and the humans amazed, For they all heard her words in their hearts that day. That night at the rescue was blessed indeed, But you can help out, and do a good deed. Bring an orphan home who needs your love, And the Rescue angel will smile from her home up above. Written in honor of the One who was Born in a barn.
