The FACTS about Horse Slaughter
The majority of all Americans support the END of horse slaughter in recent polls.
More than 65,000 horses were slaughtered last year, and thousands more were exported to Canada and
Mexico for slaughter.
There has been no increase of abuse or mistreatement of "unwanted" horses in California where horse
slaughter is banned, and therefore no increase is expected with the banning of horse slaughter country
wide.
It is not the old, sick and lame who are going to slaughter. 92.3% of the horses arriving at slaughter
plants are graded as in GOOD condition according to USDA inspectors.
Approximately 690,000 horses die annually in this country. That means that approximately 99% of horse
deaths do NOT go to slaughter.
Bottom line- Slaughter is NEVER a humane way to end a horse's life.
How can you make a difference?
Contact your legislators and ask them to support anti-slaughter bills when they go through legislation.
Never sell your horse at an auction. If you are selling your horse, inspect the home the horse will be
going to. Ask for references.
If your horse is old, sick, lame or injured beyond repair, PLEASE have your veterinarian humanely
euthanize your friend. Do not dump your companion at a feedlot or auction house, in the hopes of
making a few dollars. The only method of death for a horse that is truly humane is lethal injection by a
veterinarian. Your horse gave his all for you every day of his life. Give him the gift of love, a death with
dignity.
