Even Lizards Have Angels...
Hermione is now a permanent resident of the ranch.  After over a year of
rehabilitation, the decision was made to place her in what we thought was a
knowledgeable and caring home.  Her new owner promptly gave her away
(without telling us, a violation of our contract!) and her next owner had no idea
how to take care of a Green Iguana.  Finally in desperation after Hermione
went on a 4 month hunger strike she contacted us.  Hermione is now home,
and will live out the rest of her years with us.
Norbert and Hermione were thrown out by their owner onto a balcony in
Minneapolis in January after years of mistreatment and neglect.  They were
transported to the rescue to give them the best chance at life.

Sadly, the abuse that Norbert had suffered at the hands of his past owner was
just too much to overcome, and this gentle giant passed away surrounded by
his family and friends.  It was found upon his death that he had severe liver
cirrhosis from an improper diet,  infected and impacted femoral pores, several
small nodule tumors, severe MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease) from again,
improper diet, and these factors caused his mouthrot.  Mouthrot is painful and
caused him to stop eating, and when finally he was eating at our rescue his
intestines had gone into stasis and he was unable to pass food into his
intestines.  It was a tragic chain reaction that was totally preventable by proper
care.  Please, we ask of you- do not buy a pet on impulse- research, research,
research!
Hermione and Norbert, and their best friend
Jennie...  Rest in peace Norbert in the hands of our
Creator...
It is expensive to keep Green Iguanas.  These herbivores have strict dietary needs,
expensive lighting and a large enclosure.  They are not ideal pets.  They bite, slash
with their tail, and can cause severe damage.  The average pet owner simply cannot
commit to caring for a reptile with such specific needs.  There are very few options
for large, unwanted Green Iguanas.  Our rescue has made the commitment that no
iguana will be turned away.

You can help by contributing to our Friends of Norbert fund.  This fund helps keep
our iguanas in veggies, lighting, enclosures and their herpetological veterinarian
appointments.

Do not purchase an exotic pet without doing research.  We wholeheartedly
recommend the efforts of the
GREEN IGUANA SOCIETY of which we are a
respected member and contributor.  There is a vast amount of knowledge available
on their website, available by clicking above.
