Kennel Korner by Pam Abels WhipStaff Ranch & Rescue recently became the home to a mother dog and her three babies. The mother dog was lost and alone, soon to deliver a litter of puppies. She made her way to a house, laid next to the house for protection from the wind and gave birth to a litter of 10 little ones. She tried to feed them and keep them warm the best she could but her own body was in need of nourishment too. She was very thin and dehydrated. It was apparent to the residents of the home she had been without food for some time. They were unable to buy the shelter and food she needed so an angel helped her and her new family. She called us when the weather started to get colder and asked if we had room for this small family. There were originally 10 babies but only 5 survived. Two were given to new homes and the other three came here with mom. We discovered that they all have a medical condition, which can be cured called mange. The medication is expensive. We are asking for your help with this medical expense. If you can spare a few dollars to help this beautiful family, please consider sending it. Normally we do not ask for help but we have been bombarded lately with special needs animals that desperately needed medical attention. Our budget is drained after buying antibiotics for Quinn and Oscar, cats that both had pneumonia as well as dog food to feed the entire bunch of rescue dogs we are now a temporary home to. We appreciate the help that many have given and would like to say that the animals do too. No one ever goes hungry here, no one goes without medication, and no one goes without love. Thank you all. Harsh, a one-year-old Chessie mix arrived this weekend. His owners could not keep him because their landlord did not like dogs and forced them to give him up. His family had a very hard time with it, which tells us that he was well loved. He is a beautiful golden brown boy with lots of energy for all kinds of activities. He loves spending time with kids and is a good boy. If you are looking for a good hunting dog to train that is out of the puppy stage, perhaps Harsh would fit your needs. If you are looking for just the right sized foot warmer, I am sure he would be happy to oblige there too. Lamar, an 11-month-old lab mix is still waiting for a home of his own. He is very gentle, has a personality that makes you believe he could manage any situation. He needs to have a home where they would give him lots of love and hugs. Lamar was a pup that lived on the streets of his neighborhood for several months, eating from garbage cans and what scraps people would offer him. When the cold came, it was decided that Lamar needed to come here to find a new home. He would be a fun dog to have as a new family member. He appears to be housebroken and knows some commands. Little Teto, a 4-month-old lab mix wants so desperately to have a little girl or boy to play with that his whole body shakes and he whines with excitement. One of the pet rats we took into our shelter had a happy, healthy litter of 11 babies. If you are interested in adopting one of them, please call. They will be available for adoption this weekend. We were contacted from a gentleman in the cities that had two Iguanas that he did not want anymore and wanted us to take them. They have arrived. They will not be available for adoption for some time though, they are very underfed, dehydrated and suffering from severe frostbite, loss of muscle mass, missing toes, mouth rot and various wounds. If you would like to see these Iguanas and the condition they arrived here in, go to our website. We do take in all types of creatures and are pleased to be able to care for them and heal them so they can go on to a new life with people that will properly care for them. If you are thinking of getting an exotic pet, please do your research before bringing them home. Some pets are extremely difficult and need special care. These Iguanas deserved better than what they were living and we are pleased to help them. Thank you Dr. Busby for your advice and care. We still have several little kittens ready for their very own couches to sit on. We were recently asked to take in several older cats from a shelter that was over-flowing. They are all spayed or neutered, current on all shots including their rabies and have been feline leukemia tested. Some are Persian mixes; some have long hair, and two beautiful white cats with golden eyes. One of the cats has the most unusual marking of a heart on its back. As a winter incentive, all dogs will go home with a package of microwave popcorn, hot cocoa and a fuzzy toy to cuddle up with on those cold nights. The kittens and cats will go home with special gifts prepared just for them, including fuzzy catnip mice, sleeping pads and a goody bag of treats. Who could ask for more? We are still looking for any un-used doghouses you might like to donate to our rescue. They must be in good shape and keep the harsh winter wind out. We are also in need of a few bales of clean straw for bedding. If you can help please call us. Thank you to all of our special friends to the animals that have been making food, toy, collars and leach donations. We really appreciate the help, and the animals love the treats! Please have a wonderful Christmas, perhaps with your new pet! Please look at our website, www.whipstaff-ranch.com for pictures and information on all the residents waiting for the call that says they are going to their very own home. You can call us at 467-3309 or email us at celtic@paulbunyan.net also. We are also listed on www.Petfinder.com WhipStaff Ranch & Rescue has been in operation for 15 years, finding wonderful homes for all the “throw-aways that cross our doorstep. We are committed to all creatures that cannot speak for themselves, we hope you are too.
Kennel Korner by Carolyn Van Wert This week we received a phone call that brought a beacon of hope to our rescue. You’ll remember our plea last week for medication for Ellie and her babies, Chloe, Gilbert and Filbert. They are the momma dog and her 3 pups who we took in, suffering from neglect and mange. To our surprise, 2 wonderful ladies came to their aid. Sherry and Doreen went shopping for the pets in our care, including purchasing the very expensive medication that will cure the mange these babies are suffering from. Their generosity will help many more than just this little family, it will be plenty to cure any other dogs we may have come in suffering from this itchy skin problem. A 21-bark salute is in order for Doreen and Sherry, true Angels for our animals! We are thrilled to let everyone know that Quinn, the little kitty that was frozen to the road has made a marvelous recovery, and received the best gift of all this holiday season- a home of his own with a family that has promised to love him for a lifetime! We’d like to thank everyone who helped support Quinn and came to visit this special furkid during his recovery. Many people have asked about our ANGEL program. We always say that animals have angels watching over them, and decided to incorporate this belief into our rescue. You can be an Angel to a pet in our care who is recovering from neglect or illness. Your small monthly sponsorship for the pet of your choice gives you an Angel on our website next to that pet. You’ll be notified when your sponsored pet is adopted and you can choose another to sponsor if you like. This helps with the ongoing care, medication, food etc. for your sponsored pet. Please call or check our website for more details about this exciting new opportunity. And don’t forget to see the Angels watching over rescue pets right now! Have you lost a gentle young neutered black lab male on County Rd 23 (the Itasca Road) in the last several weeks? We have been contacted by the person who has your dog. They are unable to keep him much longer. He had abrasions and they think he may have fallen out of the back of a truck. Please contact Mike at 218-785-2966 if this may be your dog! I’d like to introduce you to a few pets that are ready for new homes. Mulligan is a cat was found when a new tenant moved into a home. He had evidentially been abandoned or perhaps left behind by the previous tenant. He came to us just 3 lbs. He was just bones and fur! In one week of feeding he was up to 6 lbs. Mulligan is a beautiful marmalade orange longhair boy who has been neutered. He is still thin, but he’s ready to go! He is super luvey and affectionate, I can’t imagine anyone abandoning an animal, but especially a lovely boy like Mulligan. Bessie has the dubious honor of being our longest-term cat right now. She is an adorable “cow pattern black and white spotted girl. Bessie was born under a cabin, and was very scared of people. One of our best foster homes worked their magic on Bessie, and she is now one of the most affectionate kittens we have! Bessie talks to you and loves to be held. It is imperative we find homes for cats as quickly as possible. We are working with a shelter that is severely overcrowded and is being forced to euthanize to make room. Some of these cats have been in the shelter literally for years. These cats deserve a better life than being locked in cages forever. If you have been thinking about adding a special puss cat to your family, now is the time to do it! All the transferred cats have been spayed/neutered, are current on all vaccinations and are Leukemia tested clean. We’ve received new dogs of course. Annabelle, a cocker mix, and Buddy, a Schnauzer mix were surrendered to us when their owner moved and could not bring them. Annabelle is 14 months and spayed, she is about 35 pounds and a taller, slender girl. Her hair has been clipped. Buddy is very cute with his wild beard and fuzzy feet! He is 5 months old and also about 35 lbs. Both Annabelle and Buddy are gentle and housebroken. We have many more pets looking for just the right home all the time. We try our best to get them into homes quickly so that more animals can be helped. This is especially important with cats. By opening your heart and home to a rescued pet from our ranch, you literally help us save lives.
