Kennel Korner By Pam and Carolyn, As told by “Vincent “In the dark, cold debris we all sat, my sisters and I. Our tummies were full of Mothers sweet warm milk, but we heard her’s rumble with hunger. She told us, “Stay here babies, I need to find food. It seemed a long time, the light coming in through the window faded and turned dark several times, only to become bright when the sun awoke each morning. Our bed of rags grew colder as we huddled together, trying to stay warm in the cold house. We listened for Mother to return, but her soft steps were one morning replaced by loud voices, heavy boots and banging noises. BANG! BANG! BANG! We awoke with a start, crying in fear. A human came close holding a hammer in his hand. I told my sisters, “I will protect you, get behind me! and barked at the man coming towards us. To our surprise, he crouched down, put the hammer down and spoke to us in a soft voice. He could see we were scared. And we were too! But the man smelled so nice. He smelled warm and good, and when he held his hand out there were crusts of bread in it. Of course being the only boy of the family it was my job to see if the bread in his hand was safe for my sisters to eat. I licked the bread and it was like eating a cloud. One gulp and it was gone! It was so delicious, and when it landed in my tummy I realized how hungry I was. The other men came over and looked at us. I heard one say that the house had been empty for days, we must be starving. Everyone dug out brown sacks filled with the most wonderful smelling things, and fed us from their lunches. They found a basket for us to cuddle in for a long time, until the light started fading once more outside. We went into a rumbly noisy moving thing and when the ride stopped, we found ourselves in a place unlike any we had ever seen before. There were many animals like us here, so many smells and sounds. At first it was overwhelming, and we were afraid. I mean, my sisters were afraid, I was doing my best to be tough so no one would hurt my sisters! Mother had said it was my job to watch over them and I didn’t want to break my promise to her. First the people here hugged us and kissed us, then they looked in our mouths to see how old we were. They gave us some yucky medicine in our mouths and a needle put medicine into us. The people said it was so we would stay healthy and get rid of any worms in our tummies. I still don’t know what a worm is, but I don’t think I have any in my tummy! The ladies gave us food! Warm, soft food full of meat and it smelled sooooo good. I told my sisters to eat as much as they could because we didn’t know if we would be hungry again soon. After we ate we were so tired we all fell asleep in our warm bed filled with sweet smelling wood shavings. When we awoke, it was to kisses and hugs and more warm food. We got our pictures taken and now we are famous! I sat and watched one of the humans here put my picture on a thing called an internet. She said people find new pets by looking at the internet and within no time I would go to a new home where I would be loved and never worry again. A little bitty person spent three days holding us, kissing us, and loving us too. For some reason when that little person held us the kisses were just that much sweeter and the hugs even more warm! Maybe it was because she smelled like candy and fun, and giggled everytime I kissed her back? I would love my new home to have a little bitty person of my own to kiss and play with. We got names here too. I found out my name is Vincent. I learned that my sisters are Rosa, Carmalita and Anna Marie. Mother always just called us “Babies. My sister Rosa has a white spot on her chest that looks like a faraway place called Italy, so that is why we all have Italian names. And they told us we are a very special kind of puppy too! We are called “mixed breed. We sort of look like something called a Labrador, but something else too, no one can quite figure it out. Mother never told us we were anything besides babies! And, what is amazing is that our teeth told them we are about 6 weeks old. These people here are amazing, they know everything! Well, I just wanted to tell my story to you. Its not much of a story, but I’m only a little boy and I haven’t had much of a life yet to talk about. But if you would like to bring me home and give me a wonderful life, I could someday write a book! Thank you Vincent for sharing your story with us. Perhaps by reading it, people with enough love in their hearts will want to bring you or one of your sisters home with them. What could be better than opening your home to an orphan? For those of you who called asking what we currently are in need of, we are in need of adult dog food and puppy chow. We use the “green bag of adult 21% dog food from L & M Fleet. Things like scooping kitty litter, adult cat food, and pine shavings are always needed, and I can assure you that we put every gift to very good use. Nothing goes to waste here! Kennel Korner by Pam Abels With St. Valentines Day approaching, we thought we would bask in the feelings of love, comfort, cherishing, and yes, that little baby with the wings and pointed arrows which seems to symbolize all that is mystical and magic about love. First, a little bit about that young fellow we all smile at when we see him. Cupid was the god of love in Roman mythology. The name Cupid is a variation on Cupido ("desire"), and this god was also known by the name Amor ("love"). It was commonly believed that Cupid was the son of Venus- the Roman goddess of love - and this association between Venus and Cupid was quite popular in myth, poetry, literature, and art. Around this time of year, everyone finds themselves trying to find just that perfect gift for the special one they love, diamonds, candies, trinkets and cards but if you think about it, those things fade, get lost and eaten after awhile. We thought we might suggest a few special gifts that would last forever, at least several years. An on-going memory of your love and devotion. Give that special someone a loving, cuddly always-devoted pet they can come home to after a long hard day at work. Your loved one will never be alone, never have cold feet, never forget the special kisses they receive even when you are not there. It truly would be a constant reminder that you were thinking about them and always want to be near. We have some very lovely cats, puppies, rabbits, a guinea pig and many rats looking for that cuddle-buddy to snuggle up to when you need them. I have a personal favor to ask of anyone willing to help me. I have a stalker. He follows me all over my house, snuggles in my pillows and rubs on my shoes all day. When I am not paying attention, he leaps into my lap and hugs me so tight I am pinned to the chair. The favor I need is this, I need someone that can take my place. I know this sounds strange but I already have a cat of my own and he has told me I do not need another. I am really a dog person but this guy does not seem to care. He is adorable and very beautiful but I am not interested. Carolyn says that this is why he has chosen me, I ignore him but this is crazy! If you think you can handle this task and give my stalker a good home, please call, soon, maybe today! Ask for Snickers, he will probably answer the phone since he is always stuck to me like glue… We still have two 6-week old puppies left, two 3 month old pups, two 1-year old dogs, several cats and rats like crazy waiting for just the right home to come along. If you would like to give these special pets a new forever home, call us today before they are gone. Spring is coming soon so why not celebrate with a special friend? I personally don’t know what I would do without my dogs and cat. I can always depend on them to be there when I need them, and even when I don’t. That is a good thought actually; no one likes to be alone. They know when you are depressed, scared, happy or just in the cuddle mood. I love my special friends, and you will too. Come see who is waiting just for you. Please look at our website, www.whipstaff-ranch.com for pictures and information on all the residents waiting for the call that says they are going to their very own home. You can call us at 467-3309 or email us at celtic@paulbunyan.net also. We are also listed on www.Petfinder.com WhipStaff Ranch & Rescue has been in operation for 15 years, finding wonderful homes for all the “throw-aways that cross our doorstep.
