Kennel Korner- By Pam Abels I would like to introduce myself; my name is Katie, at least that is the name that my foster home gave me. I remember laying close to my mother when I was a baby, feeling her warmth on cold days. My brothers and sisters nestled close also making us drowsy after she fed us. I drifted off into silent sleep knowing that mother would be there when I woke up to love me and keep me safe. She never had much food for herself and her family was mean to her. One morning I woke up and found that my mother was not warm anymore, she was as cold as the air around us, and the food she once gave us was not there. Someone came and picked her up so unkindly and threw her onto a pile of garbage in the yard. I looked into her eyes and wondered what would become of us. Over the next few days people came and took my siblings away, all strangers. Soon there were three left. My brothers scavenged for food and shared with me. Being a girl, I had to learn to be tough and independent but I was always so afraid, especially at night when the dark covered us and left us shivering until we finally fell asleep. We were hungry but no one cared. I was kicked awake one morning by a mud crusted old boot. The man wearing them was bellowing at the three of us. I heard my brothers screaming as the man hit them with a stick over and over again. Then he turned to me. We all tried to escape. My brothers raced past him as he grabbed me by my neck. He carried me to a shed and grabbed something from inside with his loose hand. Not a stick, but something else, a bottle. He tried to pour the liquid into my mouth but it went over the top of my head and it began to drip down the sides of my face. He laughed as he saw me wiggle, trying to get loose from his strong grip. He poured more onto my head then threw me onto the ground. I rolled my head in the muddy snow trying to make it stop hurting but it keep burning, fire, then blood. I ran into the woods where I found my brothers. We laid there for days, quiet, silent and barely breathing. Once we thought it would be safe we came out of the woods and found a road. We wanted to get far away from that man and his people. Soon we were picked up and taken to a place where the grass was green, the air did not smell like death and the people talked softly to us. We were scared and frightened. After giving us a bath, we were put into a kennel with our own house. There were bowls lying on the ground. Mickey, the biggest brother walked over to the dishes to see what was inside, then he began to eat and drink in utter disbelief. This was food, good food and there was more than enough for all of us and clean water. We thought we were dreaming but could not stop eating. These new people brushed us and fed us and played with us and rubbed our bellies. We rolled in the green grass and talked to the other dogs they had living here too. They had other animals that I did not recognize. I love it here. Soon people came and took my brothers away, they had new homes, children that loved them. No one came for me. I am sure it’s because of my burn scar but that does not mean I am not a good girl. I am a part lab/collie mix with curly black hair. I want a home where the people would love me and give me those special belly rubs, baths with bubbles and hugs and kisses on my head. I want my own blanket to lie on and at night I want to hear the sleep sounds of the people that love me. Katie now lives at WhipStaff Ranch and Rescue, a family owned and operated rescue for animals of all types. We see to the medical, physical and mental attention of all animals. June 28th 2005 "Twiggy"
ADOPTED!
Kennel Korner By Pam Abels On a chilly May day we became the temporary home of Twiggy, a golden lab mix not quite a year old. When she arrived here, she weighed barely 11 pounds. She had seven puppies only 16 days old. Three of the pups were near death; Twiggy herself was literally skin and bones. A barely walking skeleton. We could not refuse this heart-wrenching sight. Twiggy came from a farm where the lady collected animals but had no means to support them medically or food wise. She thought that if she kept the dogs, male and female, in an old dairy barn, they would be fine. She seldom fed the animals and water was scarce because she had to carry it. The dogs bred as they grew, puppies having puppies. Twiggy was one such puppy. Soon the old lady could not carry water and the fate of the dogs was up to God. A neighbor of the old lady stopped by once a week to help. She and heard the screams coming from the barn. She investigated and found the terrible sight of dead dogs, in various forms of decay, male and female dogs locked in stalls with puppies from many litters wall to wall. The neighbor contacted officials. Twiggy had 10 pups when she was taken from the old barn, three died the next day. She was put into a kennel with the remaining 7 pups and kept there for two weeks. We were called and we rushed there to help Twiggy and her pups, also taking in a few others that needed rescuing. When Twiggy came to our home, she was severely dehydrated, malnourished and very frightened. She dined on fresh water for the first time in her life, ate fresh cooked rabbit to help get her digestion system going again. She had no body fat and no muscle mass due to nursing. They were all put under a heat lamp and given fresh blankets and bedding. Twiggy never left their side. As she consumed water and goats milk, the three sick pups were able to regain their strength. Soon they were eating puppy food with their mother and grew at an amazing rate. To think, fresh water was the key to the survival of 8 delicate lives. The puppies have all gone on to new homes of their own but Twiggy remained behind. She needed to gain more weight and relax after being such a good mom. Now she is ready to have a wonderful home all her own. She is adoring of children, loyal to those that love her and helps guard our ranch. She likes other dogs, cats, and goats and is used to chickens, rabbits, horses and donkeys. If you would like to help Twiggy but have no room at your house, please consider sponsoring Twiggy’s spay. She deserves a life without the concern of another litter. Twiggy now lives at WhipStaff Ranch and Rescue, a family owned and operated rescue for animals of all types. We see to the medical, physical and mental attention of all animals in our care. WhipStaff Ranch has been in existence for 15 years and will continue until there is no need for such a safe haven for animals that have been neglected, abused or abandoned.
