Kennel Korner By Pam Abels In a perfect world there would be enough homes for all the little animals that are born. In a perfect world there would not be evil deeds done to the animals that trust us to keep them safe. In a perfect world all animals belonging to families that love them would be spayed and neutered to protect them from unwanted births, cancers, and other medical conditions that can occur. But unfortunately we live far from a perfect world. Animals are allowed to be beaten, drowned, shot, run over, and starved to death on a daily basis. People have stolen others loved pets and dumped them elsewhere to fend for themselves in an effort to hurt the owner. Who thinks about torturing children this way? Who thinks about the dangers they have placed the animal in just to satisfy their bizarre amusement. We take kids out of abusive homes but who considers the family dog tied with a chain around his neck that has grown into his skin. Who considers the kittens that were allowed to be born, grow up to a few weeks old then taken out and put into a bag and drowned. What about the mother dog that had a litter of pups but no one feeds them and the mother dies, leaving the pups to die a horrible death. People try to be with their family members as they pass away but who is standing by when a family pet is dying in the back yard from lack of food, water and love. They pass silently… alone. Who cries tears for those lost by abuse and neglect? There are a few of us that do. We see the terrible wounds caused by hands that should have loved. We work with those whose trust in humanity has been broken or are in fear of pain when a human touches them. They want so badly to be loved and to love and try hard to get past the pain. They put on a happy tail hoping maybe this new person will not hurt them. All forgive but can never forget. Haunted by the memories of the past, hopeful their new life will stay as loving and safe as it is since they came here. We give them hope for the future, can you help them continue to hold onto it for the rest of their lives after their physical wounds are healed. Can you help to heal their torn hearts and give them inner peace? All most ask is a small corner somewhere they can call their own, where they are warm, fed good food and clean water and maybe…. just maybe loving arms to hold them when a storm comes and frightens them. They promise to be there when you are sad, when the world seems to be against you and when all others have turned their backs on you. It is their gift to give to you, their undying love and devotion. Can you turn your back on this plea? Can you turn your back and not shed a tear for those that have gone through so much in their short lives? I can’t, but my house is full and I need to find wonderful homes for the throw-aways left in our care. Please call and adopt a wonderful pet today, you will never regret doing so. Currently at WhipStaff Ranch, CC the little 4-month-old pup that was being used as a bait dog for a dog-fighting ring is still waiting for a wonderful home. She is a cute little sweetie that wants to be held with lots of hugs and kisses. Belly rubs are also a very important part of her daily life here so it is expected this will be continued. CC would love to hear from a loving person with a good home for her. We also have beautiful kittens needing a home with a scratching post of their very own. The five guinea pigs are ready for homes where they can sing for you. These little guys are perky and fun, racing around their cages cooing and singing to anyone that comes near. My dog Tucker sits and listens to them all day, sometimes I think he can understand what they are saying! Honestly, if we don’t find a home for them soon I think he might just start thinking he is one. Please help me out by giving them a good home, now! Kennel Korner By Pam Abels Imagine being born to a wonderful mother that saw to your every need. She fed you, kept you warm and safe, teaching you along the way all the interesting things expected of a new puppy. You were happy, playing with your brothers and sisters, and then piling up in a heap to take your naps. The warm closeness you felt gave you dreams that made your little feet move and a smile appeared on your puppy face. One day Mother told all of you that it was time for you to go to your own new homes where you would be loved and played with. Her job was done and she hated to see you go but she knew that her family would give you to only the best families. Your job was to be the best puppy you could be, listen to the rules and be happy when your new family loved and hugged you like she did. This news scared you but you knew that Mother would never lie to you. She trusted her family. One day a young girl comes to see you and your brothers and sisters. Everyone is excited and tries to make her pick them. She looked at the entire family and picked you. Mother was pleased because she heard the girl promise that she would love and protect you for the rest of her life. She cuddles you as she walks away, into your new life without Mother. At your new home the young girl holds you close and kisses you, laughing when you wiggle closer to her. This isn’t so bad you think, she is a nice person and she loves me. As the days go by things change, but not in such a good way. The girl puts you outside with a chain around your neck and leaves you there, in the dark with all the scary sounds and smells. Some days she comes and gets you but it seems less and less. The girl stops coming to see you and a man brings you food when he remembers, sometimes filling your water bowl. You are not played with anymore. You are in the middle of a backyard where no one can see you or hear your muffled cries. Four years you have been on a chain, never taken to a doctor for shots, never again played or cuddled with. You are alone. Little Frayda comes to our rescue with this sad story. She is an unbelievable little dog with a personality that is so caring, generous and loving it is amazing. She is a delight to have here but she would love to have a home where they will keep the promise made to her mother, to love and protect her for the rest of her life. Frayda is a 4-5 year old Golden Lab mix. She only barks when someone drives up into the yard, otherwise she is very quiet. She is truly a dog that would spoil anyone that showed her love and companionship. Please call and offer her that chance. We received more kittens this weekend. They came from a lady that was overwhelmed by strays that had litters. Some are about 7 weeks old and some are 11 weeks now. We have only 2 Guinea pigs left needing a home. Tucker is still keeping watch over them. I was concerned that he might pass out from his diligent watch; we put a helmet on him in case he fell over from exhaustion. Please help me find a home for these other two so Tucker can get his rest! He is getting older and needs to resume his previous job of lying on the couch. Kennel Korner By Pam Abels WhipStaff Ranch & Rescue had a terrible thing happen last Sunday. It was tragic. Writing about it breaks my heart and once again brings tears to my eyes, but I need to share with everyone what we dealt with. We had gone into town for supplies so we were gone for a few hours. When we came back to the house we found a small animal carrier crushed and scattered at the end of our driveway. There were six little bodies, little souls that had been dumped on the edge of the roadway that someone had hit with either a four-wheeler or a truck. The tiny little bodies were scattered amongst the carrier shards. We were devastated. Of course we had to pick up the tiny kitten bodies, broken and frail to bury them with the respect and dignity they would never know. They were so small, maybe 5 to 6 weeks old. They once were beautiful babies, but never had a chance. We could not understand who would abandon a carrier of kittens on a roadway, knowing they were at the mercy of anyone that came along. I know no one called about needing to place the kittens, we would have tried to help in anyway we could. Why didn’t’ the people just bring them up the driveway and leave them on the porch where they would have been safe or called and asked us to take them. It still haunts us seeing those little bodies like that. I hope that if anyone has animals that need help, please call and we will do what we can to help you and the animals. Please don’t resort to something like this. I personally don’t think I could handle a sight like that again. This is exactly why we say we take in the “throw away pets. Unfortunately we could not help these kittens like we wanted.. Currently we have oodles of little kittens, 6 to 7 weeks old waiting for homes. We also have some older kittens that would love to cuddle up on your couch for a nice nap. We have about 25 kittens in my dining room. As an incentive we will offer this, for every cat adopted we will send you home with their very own catnip filled hand made rabbit pelt mouse! You can’t beat an offer like that! We also have two male guinea pigs getting fat and sassy, ready to play with their very own friend. Cavies as they are also called make good 4-H projects too! They are easy to take care of, kind and gentle, and live longer than most rodent pets. Why not give them a try. Frayda and CC have been placed with wonderful families that promised to love them forever. We have a new resident that needs a great home. Her name is Honey. She is a young yellow lab, about a year old. Honey was left with a friend for a few days and the owner decided not to come back for her after three weeks. The friend could not keep her so he called us. She is a natural “pointer so she might be a good prospect for a hunting dog. She loves to play fetch and has a lot of energy. Honey is a very strong dog that needs a job so she can burn off this energy. Honey is very kind and sweet by nature but needs to understand that she will not be kept on a chain all her life. She loves car rides and plays in the water so swimming would be fun for her and her new owner. She is very smart and learns very fast. She would be highly trainable and be a good watchdog. Honey said she would love to be a housedog if possible, this way she said she could keep the burglars out. I tend to believe her. Please call on these wonderful pets available. People always call and ask what we need to help out. Kitty litter, the clay litter since we dump it everyday is great. With all these kittens here, kitten food would be great too. If you have a doghouse you are not using perhaps you could give us a call, we sure could use it. It would allow us to take in more unwanted dogs. We sincerely appreciate all the support we have gotten from readers, businesses and individuals as well as the BuyLine. Without your support we could not do the work we do. Thank you so much. Kennel Korner 9-27-05 By Carolyn Van Wert Kitten season is once again upon us. It seems to go in waves from spring through late fall. Every day our phone rings and we are asked to take unwanted litters. We can only help a small percentage of these kittens due to the fact that we operate out of our home, with a very small budget. The small donation we ask for adopting a new friend from our rescue does not begin to cover the true expenses we face each and every day. But, we try our best to help each person who calls. The first thing we recommend- if you don’t want the trouble of trying to place litters of kittens in loving homes, do the kindest thing for your feline friend- have her spayed before she has a chance to reproduce. Until we find homes for the 14 kittens we have right now, we do not have room for any more that desperately need help. If you are thinking of adding a new friend to your family, perhaps the time is now. We are especially concerned with 4 beautiful 4-month old kittens, as they are getting older and are harder to place. When people come to adopt, they naturally flock to the tiny babies, ignoring the “teenagers who are already trained to use a litter box, growing well, and are happy and healthy. These 4 older kittens are deep rich glossy black shorthairs, with tiny white bibs on their chins. They look like black panthers- truly stunning. These kittens are already hunting mice. We’d especially love to see these kitties in new homes this weekend! We also have 5 tiger striped boys who are about 9-10 weeks old. Many people pass up the boys, believing that girl kitties are better mousers. I can say from experience that our boy cats are excellent mousers, and are much more loving and affectionate than our girl cats. These kittens are just as deserving of a new home as their sisters, who have all been adopted. And I promise you, no matter whom you choose, you will never regret your decision to bring a new friend home to your family. Don’t forget that every kitten comes home with a handmade rabbit fur mouse filled with catnip! A new kitten joined our rescue this week. We’ve named him Mr. Wiggles because he never sits still! It took nearly 30 minutes to get a decent photo of him. He is extremely playful and needs a house with lots of people to keep him occupied. He is a gorgeous marble tabby in blue-gray and cream- truly a striking color combo. And of course I can’t forget our newest dog. Oliver is a 6-7 month old shorthaired Shepherd mix who was found abandoned on a busy highway. He was about 10 lbs underweight, had worn paws from running on pavement and bad fly bites on his ears. Oliver is an energetic young pup who needs a family to show him that not everyone will abandon him. He was brought to our rescue by his angels- now won’t you be an angel and give him what he needs the most? A warm bed to sleep in, good food, clean water, and a loving hug every day is all Oliver asks. Every hug he gets, he looks up to say, “Please, may I have some more? earning him his name and of course another hug. Honey the yellow lab is still here at the rescue, but will not be available for adoption until she graduates from “boot camp. A special friend and supporter of our work, Corporal Kasey Adolf has taken her under his charge, and will be working with her to improve her discipline and manners. We appreciate Kasey’s help more than he realizes, and we know Honey does too.
