Crested Blue Swedish Ducks
A Crested Blue Swedish is a beautiful duck when properly bred. They are a challenge to breed
though, thankfully the "culls" when fed make wonderful duck dinners or pets. Swedish ducks are
some of the most active foragers, surpassed perhaps only by the Muscovy. They do not do well in
confinement, preferring to sleep under the stars and dabble in the gardens by day. A proper CBS
has a neat round crest on the top of its head, it is a rich slate blue in color with a white bib and throat,
and the first 2 primary feathers are white. This is the ideal, Mother Nature has her say too!
The CBS is a very interesting study in genetics! With the CBS we work with both the blue gene and
the crested gene. First the blue- CBS ducks do not necessarily breed true. 50% will have the rich
blue coloring, 25% will be black and white, and the remaining 25% will be splashed blue and white.
Color can be determined at hatch, so we can select our breeding stock right away. So, half of the
hatch will have the correct color.
The crested gene is also a lethal gene. Approximately 25% of all crested ducklings die in the shell at
approximately a week into incubation. So, out of 100 eggs we may get 20-25 ducklings that have
everything we are looking for! Thank goodness ducks are delicious!
